Dental Crowns

Porcelain Crowns

Often, a dental crown (a cap that is placed over the top of a tooth) will be the restorative dentistry answer in order to repair a tooth that is weak, decayed or cracked. A dental crown will help restore that tooth back to its former functionality. Dental crowns are often made of porcelain and can be made to match the color of the surrounding teeth.

What to Expect With Porcelain Crowns

After a thorough examination and x-rays, our Ponte Vedra dentist, Dr. Chiafair, will be able to determine if a crown is needed. The existing tooth is then either filed down or built up to accommodate the porcelain crown. An impression is made of the existing tooth and surrounding area to assure that the dental crown is sized appropriately and that the natural bite is not affected. This impression is sent to a dental lab where the porcelain crown is created. A temporary crown is then placed to protect the tooth until the final dental crown is received back from the lab.
After the permanent crown has been received by the dentist, the temporary crown will be removed and the permanent crown will be cemented into place. Your new permanent crown should be treated with the same care and oral hygiene as a natural tooth.
Please call Dr. Joseph Chiafair at Ponte Vedra Dental for more information about porcelain crowns and if this may be the remedy for you.
