Invisalign: a New Alternative to Standard Braces

Straightening your teeth without the constraints of standard metal braces has become a reality with Invisalign. This dental treatment which is approved by the FDA utilizes a molded, transparent set of aligners that realign the position of the teeth progressively. Invisalign is far more convenient that metal braces and also more comfortable with no metal or wires causing mouth abrasions. Care and hygiene of your teeth is as simple as removing the aligners prior to eating, brushing or flossing.

What Is Invisalign and How Does it Work?

You will be able to preview the final positioning of your teeth at the very onset of treatment with a three dimensional image as part of a detailed dental plan. Based on this plan, the Invisalign lab will construct a series of aligners, each changed out every two weeks until the teeth are fully adjusted. You will meet with your dental team approximately every six weeks for a progress checkup.

What Issues Can Invisalign Solve?

Like conventional metal braces, Invisalign was created as an orthodontic treatment to straighten teeth and to correct issues such as:

Teeth Spacing
Missing teeth and growth patterns of the jaw bone sometimes cause shifting and abnormal spacing of teeth. Often, teeth that are unusually spaced can lead to additional dental and oral health issues.

Crowded Teeth
Often there is just not enough room in the mouth for all teeth to comfortably fit, creating crowding and potentially tooth decay or gum disease.

Crossbite
This will occur when the upper and lower jaws have become misaligned or are that way genetically. Wear of the upper and lower teeth become abnormal when they are not aligned and can create chipping and fracturing.

Underbite (Mandibular Prognathism)
Caused by abnormal jaw growth, in this case the lower teeth protrude past the upper front teeth and do not align properly.

Overbite
Instead of teeth aligning in the appropriate fashion, an overbite is where the upper set of teeth bite over the lower teeth.

Invisalign can treat all of these issues through a comprehensive dental plan and regular monitoring by your the dental team. For more information about Invisalign and to see if it is the right treatment for you, contact Dr. Joseph Chiafair at Ponte Vedra Dental for a consultation today.
